September 11th, 2001 was on a Tuesday morning. I didnt want to go to school so I took very long to get ready. My mother was really nagging because I just started my freshman year at school and she didnt want me to miss a day.
As soon as I was about to turn off the TV to leave, I saw an airplane in the towers. I told my mom and she thought I was joking. But then she realized that it was the truth. At first, there were reports of an accident. It was not until the second plane hit, that it was labeled as a terrorist attack.
I never saw my mom cry, but after watching the footage all she could think about was my dad and my cousins. My dad worked around the area of Downtown Manhattan and my cousins went to school across the street from the Twin Towers. After we had got in contact with everyone, my mother and I went to pick up my siblings to go get my father. All schools were dismissing students.
From where I lived, we were miles away from the city, I could’nt see the NYC skyline even on a clear day. But that day, I could see the smoke piling up from outside my house. That’s when it really hit me that everything that was occuring was real.
I will never forget the expression on my fathers face at home that night. It was a blank expression. I asked him “Dad, what did it sound like when the towers fell?”. He told me, “Like a big explosion, like a bomb”. He said, “The floor shook, and then you could here it falling. I will never forget the noise. it still keeps playing in my head”. Thats all he has ever said about it.
Now I can see the the lights that replace the towers every year from my house. And still I cannot comprehend what has happened.
We can all move on, but we will never forget.
